Three Lions Coach Shares The Philosophy: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.

In the past, the England assistant coach was playing at a lower division club. Currently, his attention is fixed to assist the England manager secure World Cup glory in 2026. His path from athlete to trainer commenced through volunteering coaching youngsters. Barry reflects, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and it captivated him. He discovered his calling.

Staggering Ascent

Barry's progression stands out. Commencing in a senior role at Wigan, he developed a standing through unique exercises and excellent people skills. His roles at clubs took him to Chelsea and Bayern Munich, plus he took on coaching jobs abroad for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. His players include stars like world-class talents. Today, as part of Team England, it's all-consuming, the “pinnacle” in his words.

“All begins with a vision … Yet I'm convinced that passion overcomes challenges. You have the dream then you break it down: ‘How can we achieve it, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. However, vision doesn't suffice. It's essential to develop a systematic approach that allows us to have the best chance.”

Detail-Oriented Approach

Dedication, focusing on tiny aspects, characterizes his journey. Putting in long hours under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, he and Tuchel test boundaries. Their strategies involve mental assessments, a strategy for high temperatures ahead of the tournament in North America, and creating a unified squad. The coach highlights the national team spirit and dislikes phrases including "pause".

“It's not time off or a break,” he explains. “It was vital to establish a setup that attracts the squad and, secondly, they feel so stretched that it’s a breather.”

Greedy Coaches

He characterizes himself along with the manager as highly ambitious. “We aim to control each element of play,” Barry affirms. “We seek to command the whole ground and that’s what we spend many of our days on. Our responsibility not only to stay ahead of the trends and to lead and create our own ones. It's an ongoing effort with a mindset of solving issues. And to simplify complexity.

“We get 50 days together with the team prior to the World Cup. We have to play an intricate approach for a tactical edge and we have to make it so clear in that period. We need to progress from idea to information to know-how to performance.

“To develop a process for effective use in the 50 days, we must utilize all the time available from when we started. During periods without the team, it's vital to develop bonds among them. It's essential to invest time in calls with players, we need to watch them play, sense their presence. If we just use the 50 days, we won't succeed.”

World Cup Qualifiers

Barry is preparing for the final pair for the World Cup preliminaries – versus Serbia in London and away to Albania. England have guaranteed a spot in the tournament by winning all six games and six clean sheets. But there will be no easing off; on the contrary. This period to reinforce the team’s identity, to gain more impetus.

“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the football philosophy must reflect everything that is good from the top division,” Barry says. “The fitness, the flexibility, the strength, the honesty. The national team shirt needs to be highly competitive but light to wear. It must resemble a cloak and not body armour.

“For it to feel easy, we need to provide a system that lets them to move and run as they do in club games, that connects with them and encourages attacking play. They should overthink less and focus more on action.

“There are morale boosts available to trainers in attack and defense – playing out from the back, pressing from the front. Yet, in the central zone on the field, that section, it seems football is static, especially in England's top flight. All teams are well-prepared these days. They understand tactics – defensive shapes. Our aim is to focus on accelerating the game through midfield.”

Thirst for Improvement

The coach's thirst for development knows no bounds. When he studied for the top coaching badge, he had concerns regarding the final talk, since his group featured big names including former players. So, to build his skill set, he sought out tough situations available to him to improve his talks. One was HMP Walton in his home city of Liverpool, where he coached prisoners during an exercise.

He earned his license in 2020 at the top of the class, and his research paper – The Undervalued Set Piece, where he studied 16,154 throw-ins – became a published work. Lampard was among those won over and he hired Barry on to his staff at Stamford Bridge. After Lampard's dismissal, it was telling that the team dismissed most of his staff but not Barry.

The next manager with the club became Tuchel, within months, they secured European glory. When he was let go, the coach continued with Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced with Bayern, he recruited Barry of Chelsea to rejoin him. The Football Association view them as a partnership similar to Southgate and Holland.
