Manchester United Poised to Secure Germany Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has six months left on her deal, has been a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League team.
Departure from Bayern was expected after she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top strikers. Per reports, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.
Reliable Goal Threat to Boost United's Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing should represent a major boost to United’s forward line. Schüller has been highly reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven straight seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford
The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when United seem to be building momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen further business:
- The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
