The player, forty, signed a new contract with the LA team in June and will become the first athlete to participate across 23 distinct seasons.
Sciatic pain involves pain in the nerve that extends through the lower back and down the leg.
The athlete did not participate in pre-season and missed the losses against the Warriors and the Phoenix Suns this month due to the nerve issue.
The veteran is expected to be sidelined for every one of the five of the team's games in October, which includes the opening match against Golden State.
The star, the NBA's all-time leading scorer, has not missed before the opening of the season in his 22-season tenure.
The number of over 1,500 regular-season appearances is only 50 away than surpassing former Celtics star Robert Parish's all-time record.
The four-time NBA champion played in 70 out of the team's eighty-two games the previous campaign and was active for 71 games in the year before.
