Harvard ex-president Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board
Ex-Treasury chief Larry Summers is departing from the board at OpenAI, just days after a series of emails between him and deceased financier the accused trafficker became publicly available.
He commented in a release that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have served, enthusiastic about the promise of the enterprise, and eagerly await following their progress".
Summers, who previously headed Harvard University, declared on recently that he would be withdrawing from public roles due to his association with Epstein.
Email Communications
The freshly disclosed communications revealed that the economist communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of Epstein's 2019 detention for accused trafficking of young people.
In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company said it respected Summers' decision to resign.
"We value his many contributions and the viewpoint he offered to the governing body," OpenAI commented.
Legislative Background
This news comes after both chambers of the US legislature decided on recently to approve a legislation that would require the US justice department to make public its files on the case.
The bill will afterward proceed to the desk of US President Donald Trump for signature. The President has indicated he plans to sign the bill, after reversing his view on the matter following pressure from his followers.
Correspondence Findings
A collection of Epstein-connected messages made public by the Congressional committee recently mentioned numerous well-known personalities in the billionaire's previous network, without implying any illegal behavior by those people.
The communications revealed that Summers and the financier dined together frequently, with the billionaire often trying to introduce the official to notable global figures.

After the emails were shared with the public, the former official expressed he accepted "complete accountability for my misguided decision to continue corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".
He further stated that he desired "to rebuild confidence and repair relationships with the persons closest to me".

Summers served in leadership roles under Democratic administrations; serving as economic leader under President Clinton, and as head of the White House economic team under Barack Obama.
He headed Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and remains a faculty member there. When stating his step-down from public roles recently on Monday, he stated he would persist with his academic responsibilities.
