Chicago's MLB Team Secure Japanese Slugger Munetaka Murakami on a Major Multi-Million Dollar Agreement.
In a major move for their overhauling roster, the South Side team have welcomed infielder Munetaka Murakami, completing a $34 million contract bringing in the high-profile player.
Deal Structure and Added Benefits
The agreement features a $1 million signing bonus, issued within 30 days, combined with salaries of $16 million for the next season and seventeen million for the following year.
Notably, Murakami's 2027 salary can increase based on accolade achievements in 2026:
- A seven-figure bonus for earning the league MVP award.
- Half a million dollars for finishing in the top three in MVP voting.
- $250,000 for placing fourth through 10th.
- Another $250,000 for winning the Rookie of the Year honor.
The contract includes that he cannot be sent to the farm system without his consent and grants him a free agent at the conclusion of the contract. Further benefits include a team-provided interpreter and travel costs between his home country and the States.
Compensation and Team Legacy
As part of the transaction, Chicago is obligated to provide a transfer fee of $6,575,000 to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's NPB. The Swallows get a additional payment of any triggered performance bonuses.
