Bluefin Fish Fetches Unprecedented Bid of $3.2m at Japanese Capital New Year Sale
A massive Pacific bluefin tuna made headlines at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the venue's inaugural auction of the new year.
The top bid for the 535-pound fish was submitted by the parent firm of a well-known sushi restaurant group, which runs outlets throughout Japan and abroad.
"An inaugural tuna signals a prosperous start," remarked the business owner, a regular bidder at the yearly new year's auction.
Known as the Tuna Tycoon, this businessman is famous for making record bids for premium bluefin tuna at these symbolic year-opening auctions.
Bidding Surprise and Historic Precedent
Following the auction, the winner told journalists that he was "surprised at the winning bid," noting, "I expected we would be able to purchase it a little at a lower price, but the price escalated before you knew it."
This latest acquisition exceeds his previous record purchases:
- He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
- He paid 155 million yen the following year.
- In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).
Despite once commenting that he thought he "overdid it," he has now proceeded to break his personal record yet again.
A Tradition of Exorbitant Bids
The first auction at the Toyosu fish market is typically known for exceptionally high prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by a separate culinary group, which announced the fish would be featured at its restaurants nationwide.
The intense atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has evolved into a must-see event in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was no different.

The extremely valuable tuna was shortly thereafter prepared for patrons at the entrepreneur's sushi chains soon after the auction ended.
"I sense like I've commenced the year in a positive way after consuming something so auspicious as the year starts," said one satisfied diner.
